Dopo un incidente aereo su una zona montagnosa e lacustre dell'Alaska si ritrovano in tre e poi in due a fare i Robinson, muniti soltanto di fiammiferi e di un coltellino: un attempato miliardario (A. Hopkins) e un amico pubblicitario (A. Baldwin). A complicare la situazione c'è un orso feroce che li bracca e la scoperta, da parte del miliardario, che l'amico è l'amante di sua moglie e vorrebbe eliminarlo. Nonostante la firma di David Mamet in sceneggiatura, la bellezza maestosa dei paesaggi, la cupa bravura di Hopkins, il film è artificioso sia sul versante avventuroso sia su quello psicologico.
