Un virus misterioso ha sconvolto la nostra civiltà, trasformando le sue vittime in mostri divoratori di carne umana, senza ricordi della propria vita passata. L'umanità superstite vive rinchiusa in bunker blindatissimi, nel terrore. Tutto cambia quando una squadra di umani in ricognizione alla ricerca di cibo si imbatte in un gruppo di zombie affamati e a caccia di prede: uno di loro, R, resta fortemente colpito da Julie, la ragazza di una delle sue vittime e, invece di mangiarne il cervello, decide di salvarla dalla furia dei compagni. Col passare dei giorni, la convivenza con Julie produce in R cambiamenti fino ad allora impensabili, che lo portano a credere che quel legame possa rappresentare la salvezza per l'umanità e i suoisimili: una salvezza ostacolata però da una parte da temibili "Ossuti" e dall'altra dall'esercito guidato da Grigio, il padre di Julie.
