Negli anni del declino del regno Maya, i capi della tribù degli Holcane sono convinti che per tornare a prosperare basterà costruire nuovi templi e fare sacrifici umani. Così gli Holcane, tribù che prima di essere annientata da distruttori più potenti (gli spagnoli), vanno alla ricerca di schiavi da avviare al lavoro forzato e ai sacrifici umani, nella speranza di ritrovare la perduta prosperità. Partono così alla conquista della pacifica tribù di Zampa di Giaguaro… ma il giovane Zampa di Giaguaro, scelto per essere sacrificato, decide di tentare di sfuggire al suo destino per mettere in salvo sé stesso e la sua famiglia… già perché tra i folti alberi della foresta oscura, nascosti in un pozzo, ad attenderlo ci sono la moglie incinta e il piccolo primogenito. Zampa di Giaguaro ignaro del futuro infausto (che si può solo intuire vedendo arrivare i conquistadores spagnoli) corre. Corre per non fare la fine del tapiro, trafitto e sventrato vivo.
