Il capitano Malcolm Reynolds e la sua piccola squadra di mercenari attraversa la galassia con la nave spaziale Serenity in cerca di ogni tipo di ingaggio purché sia ben pagato. Fino a quel momento tutto è sempre filato liscio, ma quando a bordo salgono il giovane dottor Simon Tam e sua sorella River, una ragazza telepatica venuta a conoscenza di alcun segreti che nessuno avrebbe dovuto scoprire, l'equipaggio della Serenity deve iniziare una dura battaglia per la sopravvivenza. Tratto dalla serie televisiva Firefly di cui di fatto ne è la conclusione, Serenity , è una fresca boccata d'ossigeno in un ambiente che, col passare degli anni, diventa sempre più soffocante e dall'atmosfera pesante e stantia.
