Sei storie si svolgono in parallelo anche se ambientate in sei epoche diverse, come se fossero presenti in un'unica dimensione senza tempo. A metà ottocento un avvocato americano si adopera contro la schiavitù, negli anni '30 un giovane compositore bisessuale viene incastrato da un grandissimo autore presso il quale lavora, a San Francisco negli anni '70 una giornalista cerca di svelare un complotto per la realizzazione di un reattore nucleare, ai giorni nostri in Inghilterra un anziano editore viene incastrato e internato in una casa di cura da cui cercherà di fuggire, nella Seul del 2144 un clone si unisce ai ribelli e scopre che quelle come lei sono utilizzate come cibo per altri fabbricati e infine nel 2321 in una Terra ridotta all'eta della pietra da una non ben identificata apocalisse un uomo entra in contatto con i pochi membri di una civiltà tecnologicamente avanzata e si ribella alla tribù dominante.
