Babbo Natale, la Fatina dei denti, il Coniglio di Pasqua e Sandman proteggono i bambini di tutto il mondo, offrendo loro non solo i doni materiali ma anche la capacità di meravigliarsi, di fantasticare, di sperare, di sognare. Li ha scelti tanto tempo fa l'Uomo nella Luna, il saggio osservatore delle vicende terrestri. Accade, però, che ora l'Uomo Nero (Pitch, da "pitch black", buio pesto) sia deciso a scalzarli, seminando la paura nelle menti dei bambini e trasformando i loro sogni d'oro in incubi neri come la pece. Per tentare di fermarlo, l'Uomo nella Luna ha indicato alle quattro leggende l'aiuto di un quinto "guardiano": lo scanzonato e dispettoso Jack Frost. Tuttavia Jack non si crede all'altezza del compito: i bambini nemmeno lo vedono, non hanno mai creduto in lui. Per capire davvero chi può diventare, allora, Jack deve prima capire chi è stato e risalire ai suoi ricordi d'infanzia, quando era ancora un bambino normale.
