Piccola battona romana è derubata e quasi ammazzata da un rispettabile impiegato cui ha affidato tutti i suoi risparmi nella speranza di farsi sposare e rifarsi una vita. Nonostante la struttura rapsodica, l'arco narrativo è rigoroso e armonico, paragonabile a una sinfonia in cui i diversi tempi s'allacciano per convergere alla definizione della protagonista e del suo destino. Episodi memorabili: la villa di Nazzari, il pellegrinaggio al santuario del Divino Amore, l'ipnotizzatore nel cinema di periferia. Oscar per il miglior film straniero. 6 Nastri d'argento: produttore (De Laurentiis), regia, Masina, Marzi, musiche (N. Rota), scene (M. Chiari, M. Garbuglia). Fornì la base alla commedia musicale Sweet Charity e al film (1969) omonimo di Bob Fosse con Shirley MacLaine. Premio a Cannes per la Masina.
