Il quattordicenne Cosmo, cresciuto nella Dublino degli anni Ottanta, deve sopravvivere alla difficile vita familiare, caratterizzata dalla problematica relazione dei genitori, dai problemi economici e dalle angherie del fratello maggiore, e a una nuova scuola pubblica, dove tutto è più pesante da gestire. Cosmo, inoltre, scrive canzoni, forma una scombinata band con alcuni compagni di scuola e gira alcuni video musicali amatoriali, per conquistare il cuore della ribelle Raphina.
