Australia, 1939. Sarah Ashley, un'aristocratica inglese, lascia Londra alla volta di Darwin, decisa a ricondurre a casa e al talamo coniugale il proprio consorte. Scortata da un mandriano brusco e attaccabrighe alla tenuta di Faraway Downs, Sarah scopre con sgomento la morte di Lord Ashley e la crisi in cui versa il ranch.
