Charlie è un uomo obeso di una cinquantina d'anni. Vive solo, passa le giornate seduto sul divano tenendo corsi di scrittura online, guardando la tv e mangiando compulsivamente. Nella sua vita ci sono Liz, amica infermiera che si prende cura del suo stato di salute sempre più precario, e la figlia Ellie, diciassettenne che ha abbandonato quando era bambina per seguire l'amore della sua vita, Adam, il cui successivo suicidio è alla causa della sua obesità. Sentendo la morte avvicinarsi Charlie decide di spendere il tempo che gli resta per riconciliarsi con Ellie, la quale non gli ha mai perdonato la sua scelta...
