Seconda guerra mondiale. Il Sergente e i suoi quattro soldati formano una pattuglia di "invulnerabili" in forza al "Grande Uno Rosso", il primo reggimento di fanteria americano. Le battaglie si susseguono, fronte dopo fronte, dalla Tunisia alla Sicilia; dalla Normandia al Belgio; attraverso l'Europa fino in Cecoslovacchia, dove si scoprono gli orrori dei lager nazisti. A guerra finita, il Sergente, come già gli era successo alla conclusione della prima guerra mondiale, accoltella un tedesco per errore, ma questa volta fa di tutto per salvarlo.
