Rip Murdock (Bogart) indaga sulla morte di un ex commilitone. Scopre così che l'amico era stato condannato per l'omicidio del marito della bella Coral, che era evaso e che aveva fatto perdere le sue tracce arruolandosi sotto falso nome. Anche Rip s'innamora di Coral ma non beve le bugie che lei gli racconta e scopre drammaticamente tutta la verità. Un eccellente noir con gli ingredienti più classici: una torbida vicenda d'amore e di morte, il detective sensibile al fascino di una donna fatale e Bogart nei panni del protagonista. La morte di Coral è suggellata nello sconsolato finale con una magistrale evocazione metaforica.
