John Carter, cercatore d'oro ed ex soldato sudista, fuggendo dagli indiani e dall'esercito statunitense incappa in una figura misteriosa, uccisa la quale viene involontariamente teletrasportato su Marte, dove la diversa gravità gli conferisce forza e agilità superiori a tutte le diverse specie abitanti il pianeta. Subito coinvolto nelle lotte tra tribù per la supremazia, a causa dell'inconsapevole salvataggio della principessa del regno di Helium, l'alieno provenuto dalla Terra riuscirà a tornare sul pianeta d'origine solo quando il suo desiderio sarà diventato rimanere sul pianeta rosso.
