Paul Kersey è un architetto cui alcuni balordi, penetrati nella sua abitazione, uccidono la moglie e violentano la figlia. Nell'animo dell'uomo esploderà un furore vendicativo che si rivolgerà verso chiunque ai suoi occhi rappresenti un pericolo per la società. Prende l'abitudine di girare armato in luoghi pericolosi e nel cuore della notte. Non gli è difficile fare brutti incontri, che risolverà quasi sempre uccidendo chi tenta di rapinarlo o importunarlo. La polizia è sulle sue tracce, non per fini di giustizia, ma per una mal riposta inaccettabilità del sovvertimento dei ruoli. Ma Paul Kersey riuscirà a eludere il pericolo di essere arrestato e si trasferirà in un'altra località, dove potrà proseguire la sua discutibile opera di giustizia.
