Siamo nel 1965 e la radio delle forze armate in Vietnam ha un nuovo d. j., Adrian Cronauer, che diventa in breve amatissimo dai soldati per la sua alluvionale e irriverente irruenza; per lo stesso motivo invece i superiori lo detestano. Adrian conosce la giovane Trinh, ma la ragazza lo tiene a distanza. Si salverà dai vietcong, ma capirà l'avversione che gli americani suscitano nella popolazione.
