La vicenda è quella della sognatrice Mathilde che non si rassegna alla condanna a morte del fidanzato ucciso dai commilitoni - durante la Ia guerra mondiale - e in maniera ossessiva cerca gli indizi che la conducano a ritrovarlo. Si sposterà dal suo paesino alla scoperta di una Parigi favolosa (rivitalizzata in digitale), con i colori vivaci di Place de l'Opéra e del Trocadero, tra preti che conoscono mezze verità, prostitute vendicative e avvocati che faticano ad essere avidi; tornerà al suo paese in preda allo sconforto, scoprirà un altro indizio e ripartirà per Parigi... è un oscillamento per la verità ripetitivo tanto che non c'interessa veramente sapere se il fidanzato Manech sia vivo o morto.
