Nella piccola nazione di Freedonia Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) assume i poteri di un dittatore, ma deve fare i conti con due spie nemiche (Chico e Harpo), un tenore (Zeppo) e un astuto “cattivo” (Calhern). Considerato da molti, ma dopo gli anni '60, il capolavoro dei fratelli Marx. È il loro unico film diretto da un regista di talento, e fa storia a sé per la miscela tra satira e operetta europea. 70 minuti di buffoneria non stop senza interventi musicali né romantici. Fu un fiasco quando uscì.
