L'undicenne Jim vive negli agi della colonia inglese di Shanghai. Il suo passatempo preferito è la costruzione di aerei giocattolo. Quando, nel 1941, i giapponesi invadono la città, nella confusione della fuga, Jim viene separato dai suoi genitori. Aggirandosi per le strade di Shanghai, il ragazzo finisce per essere arrestato dagli invasori e chiuso in un campo di concentramento con stranieri di ogni nazionalità. Qui Jim vive gli anni difficili del passaggio dall’infanzia all’adolescenza: suoi modelli sono lo scaltro Basie, ma anche il coraggioso dottor Rawlins. Con fantasia e furbizia, tra sofferenze e gioco, riesce a superare le prove di questa esperienza; riesce perfino a stabilire un’amicizia, più o meno a distanza, con un ragazzino giapponese.
