Alla metà del ventunesimo secolo l'uomo è riuscito a sviluppare un nuovo tipo di computer in grado di essere consapevole della propria esistenza. Qusti computer vengono anche utilizzati per creare particolari robot e androidi. Un giovane ragazzo (Haley Joel Osment) sta per intraprendere uno straordinario viaggio per scoprire se potrà essere qualcosa più che una macchina.
