I mostri che escono di notte dall'armadio non solo esistono ma sono anche ben organizzati. In un mondo parallelo i mostri vivono in una società civile tanto quanto la nostra (cioè ben poco), in cui spaventare bambini è un lavoro, il più importante di tutti, perchè dalle loro urla si genera l'energia che alimenta la città. Tra gli spaventatori di professione della Monsters & Co. Sulley e Mike sono la coppia più affiatata, quella che detiene il record di urla generate, un punto di riferimento per tutti, almeno fino a che per un errore una bambina non passa dal mondo degli uomini a quello dei mostri rischiando di metterne a repentaglio la carriera.
