Frank W. Abagnale Jr. è il tipico ragazzo americano di buona famiglia degli anni '60. Ma l'improvviso dissesto finanziario del padre e il divorzio dei genitori lo costringono ad andarsene di casa. Ma come sbarcare il lunario? Ad esempio ottenendo una divisa da pilota Pan Am, falsificando assegni della compagnia aerea e comprandosi una macchina marcatrice per alterare i numeri degli stessi. In poco tempo Frank, che cambia identità più velocemente dei propri abiti, diventa una delle priorità dell'Fbi ed in particolare dell'agente Hanratty, esperto in frodi bancarie e come il suo antagonista solo al mondo.
