Memento è l'imperativo del verbo difettivo latino "memini, isse" e può essere tradotto con "ricordati", che è la parola chiave del secondo lungometraggio di Christopher Nolan. Intorno a questo principio ruota infatti l'intera vicenda, non raccontata in modo lineare, ma attraverso un apparente caos che incarna il punto di vista del personaggio principale, Leonard Shelby, affetto da una particolare forma di amnesia, che lascia intatti i vecchi ricordi ma comporta la perdita della memoria breve. Attraverso un'affannosa ricerca compiuta per mezzo dell'azione e della scrittura, che serve a registrare ciò di cui la percezione non può farsi sicuro garante, il detective Shelby cerca l'assassino della moglie, l'ultimo ricordo che "non riesce a ricordare di dimenticare", in una labirintica realtà continuamente riazzerata e in cui non si può mai pronunciare l'ultima parola.
