In una cittadina del Sud degli Stati Uniti due uomini bianchi stuprano e pensano di aver ucciso una bambina di colore di dieci anni. Il padre, un veterano della guerra del Vietnam, decide quindi di farsi giustizia da solo. Intorno all'uomo si scatena però un violento scontro razziale e i rischi più gravi li corre il suo avvocato difensore, preso di mira dal Ku Klux Klan.
