Alexander Hartdegen, scienziato e inventore, vuole dimostrare che è possibile viaggiare nel tempo. La sua volontà diventa ostinazione dopo una tragedia personale che lo spinge a voler cambiare il passato. Sperimentando le sue teorie con una macchina del tempo di sua invenzione, Hartdegen viene scagliato nel futuro a 800.000 anni di distanza, e lì scopre che il genere umano è diviso in cacciatori … e prede.Ispirato all'omonimo romanzo di H. G. Wells e al film del 1960 "L'uomo che visse nel futuro", di cui è un remake.
