Deloris Van Cartier è una vulcanica cantante in un casinò di Reno, ed è l'amante del boss Vince LaRocca. Una sera assiste casualmente ad un omicidio, e l'assassino è proprio Vince. A quel punto Deloris è costretta a fuggire, minacciata di morte. La polizia, per proteggerla in attesa del processo, nasconde la donna in un austero convento retto da una rigida madre superiora, ma Deloris, insofferente alle regole, rivoluzionerà tutto...
