Amélie cresce in provincia, siamo in Francia. Suo padre è un medico fin troppo originale: visita ogni mese la figlia, che si agita ogni volta, e crede che sia malata di cuore. La madre, uscita dalla chiesa, viene schiacciata da una suicida. Più grande la ragazza va a Parigi. Fa la cameriera e incontra tanta gente. Il 31 agosto 1997 è il giorno decisivo della sua vita: vede in tv il servizio dulla morte di lady Diana, le cade di mano un tappo di bottiglia che finisce sotto una piastrella, dove Amélie trova una vecchia scatola di cianfrusaglie (figurine, la foto di un calciatore, un ciclista di ferro). Si mette in testa di rintracciare il proprietario, che a quel punto avrà una cinquantina d'anni. Lo trova, gli restituisce il "ricordo" e gli cambia la vita.
