Atmosfere noir in una avventura fantascientifica dai sapori classici. New York, 1939: La agguerrita giornalista Polly Perkins segue il caso delle sparizioni dei più importanti scienziati del pianeta quando uno squadrone di giganteschi robot attacca la città sotto lo sguardo incredulo delle persone. Polly, decisa a chiarire il mistero che sta dietro alla sconvolgente vicenda, chiederà l'aiuto di Joe ""Sky Captain"" Sullivan, ufficiale dell'aviazione e sua vecchia fiamma. I due indagheranno fino a scoprire che dietro agli attacchi si cela il famigerato Dottor Totenkopf, scienziato pazzo con distruttive manie di grandezza.
