Nella guerra del Vietnam, durante un combattimento nella giungla, alcuni marines, fra i quali il caporale Jacob Singer, si agitano freneticamente come ossessi, finché Jacob viene gravemente ferito nell'addome con un colpo di baionetta. Trasportato in ospedale per essere operato, è tormentato da continue allucinazioni, popolate da creature mostruose o riguardanti terribili scene di guerra. Jacob cerca disperatamente una spiegazione razionale alle sue allucinazioni, perciò tenta di scoprire che cosa in realtà sia stato fatto ai suoi compagni nel Vietnam...
