Guerra dei cent'anni. Giovanna d'Arco, già leggenda popolare a diciotto anni, riesce, da sola, a superare le linee nemiche inglesi e raggiungere a Chinon Carlo VII, delfino di Francia. La "pulzella" convince il futuro re di essere in diretto contatto con Dio, soprattutto lo induce ad attaccare gli Inglesi ad Orléans. Giovanna vince una battaglia dopo l'altra. Quando Carlo, incoronato re, decide di trattare col nemico inglese, Giovanna continua la guerra da sola. Tradita, viene presa prigioniera dai Borgognoni, che simpatizzano con gli inglesi, e venduta al nemico per 10.000 scudi. Il re non muove un dito, ben contento di essersi liberato della patata bollente. Giovanna viene processata per eresia. Le si offre la possibilità di abiurare ma non recede dalle proprie posizioni.
