Siamo a Baltimora, nel 1962. Tracy, grassa, simpatica ed estroversa, Penny, magra, timida e oppressa dai genitori, sono due amiche appassionate di ballo. Tracy conquista il successo in una trasmissione televisiva musicale, il "Corny Collins Show", e insieme all'amica riesce a organizzare una grande festa televisiva all'insegna dell'integrazione razziale nonostante l'aperta ostilità dei "benpensanti" del luogo.
