Un pilota della Raf abbattuto si salva per miracolo, ma ha continui mancamenti in cui sogna che un inviato celeste lo viene a prelevare per portarlo, attraverso una lunga scala, in Paradiso. Durante l'ultima crisi, la più grave, si immagina di dover sottostare a una specie di processo in cui alcuni personaggi storici perorano la sua causa e, indirettamente, la causa della democrazia in lotta. Alla fine l'uomo guarisce e può sposarsi con la fidanzata, ausiliaria americana.
