Messico, 1970. Roma è un quartiere medioborghese di Mexico City che affronta una stagione di grande instabilità economico-politica. Cleo è la domestica tuttofare di una famiglia benestante che accudisce marito, moglie, nonna, quattro figli e un cane. Cleo è india, mentre la famiglia che l'ha ingaggiata è di discendenza spagnola e frequenta gringos altolocati. I compiti della giovane domestica non finiscono mai, e passano senza soluzione di continuità dal dare il bacio della buonanotte ai bambini al ripulire la cacca del cane dal cortiletto di ingresso della casa: quello in cui il macchinone comprato dal capofamiglia entra a stento, pestando i suddetti escrementi.
