Kowalski lavora per un servizio di trasporto auto a Denver, in Colorado. Vari flashback, che si snodano per la pellicola, lasciano intuire che il lavoro è stata una sorta di seconda possibilità dopo aver perso tutto. È un veterano del Vietnam, un agente della polizia giudiziaria, un pilota di auto da corsa e un motociclista. Dopo essere stato scoperto in una cricca di malviventi che aveva a che fare con la droga, ha perso il suo lavoro da poliziotto. Ha dovuto abbandonare la sua carriera da pilota di auto e moto da corsa dopo due incidenti quasi mortali e ha perso la fidanzata in un incidente di surf. All'inizio del film, Kowalski è quasi alla fine del suo inseguimento con la polizia di stato californiana. Un flashback ci riporta a Denver, dove ha inizio il suo viaggio.
