Il celebre oratore Sheridan Whiteside è in giro per la provincia americana per una serie di conferenze. Un giorno accetta l'invito di una famiglia dell'Ohio, suoi grandi ammiratori, e insieme alla sua segretaria Maggie Cutler raggiunge la casa dei signori Stanley. Purtroppo, mentre sta per raggiungere la soglia, scivola sul ghiaccio e si sloga un piede. L'infortunio lo costringe a fermarsi in casa dei suoi ospiti, che, grazie ai suoi comportamenti stravaganti e poco gentili, in breve tempo perdono la stima che provavano nei suoi confronti. Quando il dottore gli conferma che il suo piede è a posto e che non c'è nulla di grave, Whiteside decide di rimanere lo stesso presso gli Stanley anche per cercare di mandare all'aria la storia d'amore tra la sua segretaria e un giovane giornalista locale con aspirazioni di autore teatrale...
