Sul finire dell'Ottocento, Londra è una città affascinante e pericolosa. Le novità tecnologiche attirano i cittadini più curiosi, ma il richiamo per l'occulto e il soprannaturale è altrettanto forte. Quando Sherlock Holmes e il fido dottor Watson consegnano l'assassino di giovani donne Lord Blackwood alla giustizia e, dopo aver assistito all'esecuzione capitale, assistono non di meno alla sua apparente resurrezione, Holmes è felice di potersi finalmente interessare di qualcosa alla sua portata. Tanto più che si è ripresentata a lui la bella Irene Adler, chiedendo il ritrovamento di un uomo che si scoprirà interrato nella bara di Blackwood. I casi si intrecciano, si aggrovigliano, sporcano gli abiti di fumo e di avventura.
