Pat Garrett e Billy Kid sono stati a lungo compagni di scorrerie. A un certo punto Garrett ha scelto però di passare dall'altra parte della barricata ("Il paese invecchia e io voglio invecchiare con lui", dice), e accetta il mandato di sceriffo offertogli dai coloni vessati dalla scorribande di Billy.
