Il ricchissimo industriale John Hammond è riuscito a costruire un parco dei divertimenti a tema incentrato sui dinosauri (riportati in vita grazie ad una complessa operazione di ingegneria genetica), il "Jurassic Park". Hammond invita alcuni esperti e scienziati a compiere un sopralluogo nell'isola dove il parco è allestito e a stilare una perizia positiva che gli permetta di ottenere i finanziamenti di cui ha bisogno. Ma qualcosa va storto: a causa di una tempesta, il sistema di controllo computerizzato del parco va fuori uso, i dinosauri rompono i recinti in cui sono rinchiusi e impazzano liberi dando la caccia agli umani...
