Il reporter newyorkese Ike Graham è in cerca di un'idea interessante cui dedicare il nuovo articolo della sua rubrica sul USA Today. Al pub dove solitamente trova ispirazione, fa la conoscenza di un uomo sconsolato che gli racconta di una donna che ha sistematicamente abbandonato all'altare ogni suo sposo nel giorno delle nozze. Il pezzo sulla "sposa in fuga" riceve un grosso richiamo e provoca le ire del suo stesso soggetto, Maggie Carpenter, che per pronta risposta scrive una lettera di protesta in cui denuncia le bugie e lo sciovinismo di Ike. Licenziato dalla sua editrice nonché ex moglie, Ike decide così di vendicarsi a suo modo, indagando sulle precedenti relazioni di Maggie e trasferendosi nella piccola cittadina del Maryland dove lei vive in attesa di sposarsi per la quarta volta.
