Un gruppo di infermiere dell'esercito americano lascia San Francisco per prestare servizio alle Hawaii nel dicembre 1941. L'attacco a Pearl Harbor cambia però la loro destinazione e le loro vite. Mandate a Bataan, nelle Filippine, si trovano sotto la guida della coraggiosa tenente Janet Davidson, a cui spetta il compito di farle divenire delle veterane di guerra sotto i bombardamenti quotidiani dei giapponesi. Oltre a prendersi cura dei feriti e a fronteggiare le avversità della guerra, le infermiere avranno anche modo di vivere vicende romantiche e sentimentali, che ricorderanno una volta rientrate in patria.
