Nel 1788 il comportamento di re Giorgio III (1738-1820), sul trono dal 1760, si fa sempre più eccentrico e squilibrato finché è diagnosticato come pazzo e affidato in cura a un medico (I. Holm) che gli insegna a convivere con la sua malattia (porfiria). Nel 1811, definitivamente peggiorato, fu sostituito dal primo dei suoi 15 figli, Giorgio IV.
