Stallone e De Niro sono rispettivamente Henry “Razor” Sharp e Billy “The Kid” McDonnen, due pugili di Pittsburgh finiti sotto i riflettori dell’intera nazione a causa della loro accanita rivalità. Ai tempi d’oro ognuno di loro aveva vinto un match ma, nel 1983, alla vigilia del terzo e decisivo incontro, improvvisamente Razor aveva annunciato il suo ritiro, rifiutandosi di spiegare il perché. Trenta anni dopo il promoter Dante Slate Jr.fa ai due boxer un’offerta che non possono rifiutare: tornare sul ring e regolare i conti una volta per tutte. Ma i due non ce la fanno ad aspettare: già durante il loro primo incontro dopo decenni finiscono con il darsele di santa ragione in una esilarante rissa che finisce subito in rete e diventa famosissima. L’improvvisa frenesia dei social media trasforma quindi il loro match locale in un evento imperdibile per HBO. Ora, se riusciranno a sopravvivere agli allenamenti, potranno combattere di nuovo e scoprire chi è il più forte.
