Enid e Rebecca sono due amiche che hanno appena finito le superiori e devono decidere che cosa fare delle loro vite. Enid vorrebbe andarsene di casa: è stanca del padre e della sua fidanzata Maxine. Rebecca è meno inquieta ma altrettanto indecisa sul proprio futuro. Durante l'estate le due amiche sono inseparabili e passano gran parte del tempo a corteggiare Josh, un loro coetaneo, che però non sembra essere particolarmente interessato. Enid si imbatte in Seymour, un collezionista di dischi molto più anziano di lei. I due finiscono per fare amicizia, anche se Rebecca esprime parere negativo.
