A Chicago Gary e Brooke condividono un appartamento e una vita d'amore, almeno fino a quando lui non rifiuta a lei di lavare i piatti dopo una cena di famiglia. L'incidente casalingo che ha offeso Brooke, divisa e in affanno tra casa e lavoro, nasconde una crisi più profonda destinata ad aprire le ostilità. La guerra si gioca ad armi pari e tira colpi bassi, bassissimi. Gli amici di sempre si schierano a malincuore occupando le trincee dell'uno o dell'altra. In mezzo resta il divano su cui Gary alimenta egoismo ottusità e il letto che Brooke copre di pianto e di ostinazione.
