Al rientro a casa dopo un'operazione d'emergenza, il chirurgo Richard Kimble trova la moglie ferita a morte. Comincia così l'incubo che rovinerà la sua vita: nonostante fin dall'inizio si proclami innocente, sarà infatti accusato dell'omicidio e condannato alla pena capitale, ma durante il trasporto al penitenziario riconquisterà la libertà e inizierà la sua fuga.
