Room racconta la straordinaria storia di Jack, un bambino vivace di 5 anni che viene accudito dalla sua amorevole e devota Ma' (Brie Larson, vincitrice dell'Oscar 2016 come migliore attrice protagonista). Come ogni buona madre, Ma' fa di tutto affinché Jack sia felice ed al sicuro, ricoprendolo d'amore e calore e passando il tempo a giocare e raccontare storie. La loro vita però, è tutt'altro che normale - sono intrappolati- confinati in uno spazio senza finestre di 3 metri x 3, che Ma' eufemisticamente chiama "Stanza". All'interno di questo ambiente Ma' crea un intero universo per Jack, e fa qualsiasi cosa per garantire al figlioletto una vita normale ed appagante anche in un luogo così infido. Ma di fronte ai crescenti interrogativi di Jack circa la loro situazione, e la ormai debole resistenza di Ma', decidono mettere in atto un piano di fuga molto rischioso, che potrebbe metterli però di fronte ad una realtà ancora più spaventosa: il mondo reale.
