Parigi. 1899. Satine è la star del Mouilin Rouge, la cortigiana più desiderata ma anche pronta a vendere i propri favori al miglior offerente. Finché un giorno arriva da fuori il giovane e timido scrittore Christian che si innamora, corriposto, di lei. Ma, c'è un "ma". Interessato a Satine e' anche un ricchissimo conte che è pronto, pur di averla in esclusiva, a farla diventare un'attrice e ad assumersi il carico delle spese per un rinnovo totale del locale. In agguato, poi, c'è il "mal sottile": la tubercolosi.
