In un campo lavoro di una prigione californiana, un detenuto riesce a evadere grazie all'intervento di un alleato indiano. In fuga verso San Francisco, i due si lasciano alla spalle i cadaveri di alcune guardie e di un vecchio socio, prima di minacciare un membro della loro banda e sequestrarne la compagna per cercare di recuperare il mezzo milione di dollari di un vecchio colpo. Nel frattempo, la polizia incrocia per caso il loro percorso nelle stanze di un piccolo albergo della periferia e ne nasce una sparatoria. Fra i poliziotti presenti sul luogo c'è Jack Cates, detective giustiziere nonché bevitore e fumatore compulsivo, che, per un'esitazione di troppo, causa la morte di un agente e la fuga dei due rapinatori. Ormai screditato e colpevolizzato dall'intero dipartimento, Jack decide di agire privatamente coinvolgendo un altro membro della banda finito in prigione: Reggie Hammond...
