Costretti ad allontanarsi da Chicago, i coniugi Cindy e Bob Russell non hanno altra soluzione che far venire a casa loro Buck, fratello del capo famiglia, per accudire i tre figli: Maizy di sei anni, una bambina che ama la gente e possiede una percezione che va oltre la sua età: Miles di otto anni, un fanciullo ribelle sempre con i vestiti sciatti e le mani sporche; Tia, una ragazza quindicenne molto attiva ma con un carattere chiuso ed una personalità difficile. Il bizzarro "zio Buck", pingue e pigro scapolo impenitente, da moltissimi anni fidanzato con l'insoddisfatta Chanice Kobolowski, si trova, suo malgrado, non solo costretto a destreggiarsi con i numerosissimi elettrodomestici della modernissima cucina ma anche con i suoi insopportabili nipoti ed in particolare con Tia, in permanenza arrogante ed antipatica...
