Il libro di Tom Wolfe sulla storia del programma spaziale degli Stati Uniti si legge come un romanzo, e il film ha la stessa qualità e fantasia. Esso affronta diverse fasi, dalla rottura del muro del suono da parte di Chuck Yeager, agli astronauti del Mercury 7, dimostrando che nessuno aveva la minima idea di come gestire un programma spaziale o di come selezionare le persone. Emozionante, divertente, affascinante ed elettrizzante tutto in una volta.
