La piccola Chiyo, a soli 9 anni è costretta a lasciare la famiglia e il povero villaggio di pescatori dove è nata. Venduta ad una scuola per geishe di Kyoto, viene istruita sui riti, le danze, la musica, la cerimonia del tè e l'abbigliamento adatto. Costretta a subire vessazioni e umiliazioni dalle colleghe e soprattutto dalla geisha più importante, Hatsumomo, gelosa della sua bellezza, dopo un tentativo di fuga viene retrocessa a serva. A salvarla ci penserà Mameha, geisha esperta e generosa, rivale di Hatsumomo, che la prende sotto la sua protezione.
